For 14 years we had a very special Pomeranian dog name Sassy. Believe me, she lived up to her name- she would give you lip about something if she was unhappy, but she was also a very loving and caring dog. It's funny how animals know or sense when you are sick, depressed or something is bothering you. Sassy would always know when I was sick or upset and she would stick very close to me. She wouldn't leave my side.
She was also protective of the babies in our family and she would lay by them and watch over them. Her family was very important to her. Sassy may have been small, but she had a very big personality! I really don't think Sassy viewed herself as small - I think she felt she was as big as any dog around, or at least thought she could do anything a bigger dog could do.
I remember one day - and this is where the sassy part of her personality comes out - she loved to go somewhere in the car as long as it wasn't the vet. (check up - dogie shots) The way to my Mom's was pretty close to going to vet's, except when you went to my Mom's you had to turn right when you got to a certain point and with the vet you went straight. Well, one day it was check up time - nothing was said, we put her in the car and took off. She was all excited probably thinking we were going to my Mom's. But, when we didn't turn, she immediately ran over to the window, looked out and started kind of barking in a tone that you knew she had figured out what was going on and she was letting us know that she was not happy with us. She was chewing us out!
Ever heard that expression small but mighty? It applied to Sassy - or at least she thought it did. She thought she was just as big as any of the big dogs. One day she saw a Javelina in our front yard and before we knew what was going on she took out after it! Scared us to death! Not knowing what to do one of us yelled and it scared the javelina and he ran off. What a relief! Another time there was a coyote and she went after it! It all happened so fast- we yelled to try and stop her, but it didn't work. We thought she was a goner. Luckily she realized that maybe this wasn't such a good idea - and she turned and ran back, but he did try to get her and she came back with coyote slobber on her neck! We were very thankful God kept her safe! To say the least, she brought a lot of joy into our lives.
I think back on the two instances I just mentioned and wonder how many times we think we are big enough to handle things on our own and sometimes it puts us in danger or consequences we wish we didn't have. Sometimes when we try and do things alone instead of following God's word or leading we get ourselves in trouble. And I think we've all done it. We have to stop and remind ourselves that we need to put our hand in God's and His word and lean on Him and what He says is best for us. He will guide us : Psalm 32:8 "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye." ( Psalms 73:23 ) We can trust Him. He will take care of us.
God is our creator and our Saviour and He knows what's best for us. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created He them." Genesis 1:27
Have you ever thought about the fact we are created in His image? He loves us. I know sometimes God's laws have been put down. But the way I look at it- His laws are laws of love not things that say "no" don't do that. He knows if we keep them we will be happy. He knows if we don't we won't be happy and sometimes that unhappiness or pain it causes not only affects us, but others, too. He does not want to see us unhappy or hurting. He loves us and is only looking out for us and others around us. Yes, His love shines through even in His ten commandments. The first four apply to our relationship with Him and the rest to our relationship with others. They protect us. Remember He said: "...I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." Jeremiah 31:3
